The Galapagos Islands are world famous and a dream for many tourists all over the world. Every year about 185,000 tourist visit the Galapagos Islands to appreciate this unique ecosystem and its fearless inhabitants. But the Galapagos Islands is also a province of Ecuador, with over 50,000 permanent inhabitants. To have these two combined together, without destroying the unique eco-system, the Galapagos Islands became a world heritage site and a National Park.
The Galapagos National Park is responsible for the conservation of the ecological integrity and biodiversity of the islands and marine ecosystems of the protected areas of the Galapagos archipelago, as well as the rational use of goods and services they generate for the community.
On San Cristobal Island, there work about 52 permanent employees of the National Park, including park guards, coast guards, and administrative staff. However, this is not enough to execute all the programs on the island, and help of interns is much appreciated.
Activities for trainees
Interns of different careers can apply for an internship at the National Park and work at one of the 7 departments the park has. These include: environmental education, urban development, ocean investigation, species investigation, communication and marketing, and more.
Internship requirements: Before starting your internship you must speak intermediate Spanish. You must be able to communicate with your internship supervisor and co-workers. Before coming to Ecuador you should already speak Spanish at a beginner- intermediate level. You can improve your Spanish to intermediate level by taking a Spanish course in Ecuador. On-Stage will test your Spanish on forehand. Furthermore you need to be proactive, organized, flexible and willing to adapt to a different culture.
